Food storage containers and kitchen tools that reduce grocery waste (Australia)

Which storage containers and basic kitchen tools make a real difference to food waste and grocery costs — what is worth buying, what is not, and where to find them at Australian supermarkets and homewares stores.

The right storage tools reduce waste and save money

Food waste is one of the largest hidden costs in any household grocery budget. A significant portion of it comes from poor storage — food that spoils faster than it should because it is in the wrong container, exposed to air, or stored at the wrong temperature.

A modest investment in useful storage tools pays for itself quickly when it extends the life of food you have already bought.

Containers worth having

Airtight glass or plastic containers in a few useful sizes. The most important storage tool in any kitchen. Leftovers stored in airtight containers last significantly longer than food covered loosely with cling wrap or left in a pot. A set of three to five containers in different sizes — available at Woolworths, Coles, IKEA, Kmart and similar — covers most household needs.

Zip-lock bags or reusable silicone bags. Useful for freezing portions of meat, bread, cooked grains and fruit. Flat-packed bags take up minimal freezer space, which makes labelling and rotation easier. Reusable silicone bags cost more upfront but reduce ongoing spend.

A wide-mouth thermos or food flask. Useful for taking soups or warm leftovers to work — covered in our adult lunchbox guide. It replaces both a takeaway container and a purchased lunch.

A salad spinner. Washed and spun dry salad leaves last significantly longer in the fridge than wet leaves. If you buy lettuce or salad greens regularly and throw some out before using it all, a salad spinner pays for itself in the first few weeks.

A produce storage container with vents. Berries, mushrooms and some vegetables last longer in containers with airflow rather than sealed bags. Available cheaply at most homewares stores and some supermarkets.

What is probably not worth buying

Expensive branded vacuum seal systems and specialty gadgets with single uses tend to underperform the simplicity of a good airtight container. A basic, properly sealed container does the job for almost all household storage needs.

Where to buy

Kmart and IKEA are the most cost-effective sources for general food storage containers in Australia. Woolworths and Coles carry a basic range in their homewares sections. For glass containers specifically, IKEA's IKEA 365+ range is widely regarded as reliable and durable at a reasonable price.

Connecting storage to food waste habits

Better containers only help if you use them consistently — storing leftovers promptly after cooking, labelling containers with dates, and checking what is in the fridge before shopping rather than buying duplicates of things you already have.

Our food waste guide and freezer management guide cover the habits that work alongside good storage tools.
